Each carrier sets their own rules and normally you'll fine a comprehensive list on the airlines website.

You can carry most things as baggage provided that they're legal of course but there's a lot of restrictions on hand luggage.

You can't carry any kind of weapon, explosive, human body parts, live animals or some dead animals.

In hand luggage you can't carry anything that is a weapon, looks like a weapon or could be used as a weapon such as sharp objects.

If you're unsure of anything it's best to call the airline first as there may be declarations or special arrangements that need to be made.

Go to the airline's web page and find baggage. It will tell you all you need to know. southwest allows three bags, most others only two, weight can be from 50 lbs to 70. Look it up

don't bring anything sharp - which includes fingernail clippers, tweezers, fingernail files, etc.

you can bring two bags on usually...but everyone tries to do the same, so I say just 1 of what you really need should your luggage be lost then you won't have to fight to cram your luggage in a tiny space

United Airlines provides a good deal of information and it should apply to all carriers. However, you can check the website of your specific carrier to see if they differ.

Nothing flammable or sharp. Keep your bags under 50 lbs each.
