Hi, I will be moving to the Portland Oregon area from California soon and need some info on safe, low crime areas to live in the SW Portland area. I'd really appreciate any other helpful info on Good High Schools as well as nice Apartments complexes. Thanks alot.

There is a community of small but very nice condos in Southwest Portland on SW Sutton Place. It is a very safe area with lots of trees, kids, and other residential houses. It is also not far from the main parts of the city and is easy to navigate. Additionally, the people who live in the condos are extremely warm, welcoming, and congenial.

Regarding schools, The Northwest Academy is a wonderful performing arts school that is private and located in Portland. Lincoln High School is also an excellent school, as are the Portland Waldorf School and the Catlin Gabel School. Also, if you are looking for a religious school, Portland is home to many, including the Oregon Episcopal School, St. Mary's Academy, and Central Catholic High School.

That's my recommendation! Best of luck to you.

I can't help much with the schools part, but I'm sure Google has some answers. Have you visited Portland before? The thing is, and many of my friends that have moved here from other parts of the country say the same thing, there really is no "bad" part of Portland. I would feel safe in any area of Portland no matter what the time of day or night. If I had to RANK them, I'd even say that SW Portland would be the very best.

Actually, I do know that the schools in Lake Oswego are considered some of the best in the area, and if you use rent.com, you'll be able to focus on apartments just in that area if you'd like.

As a Portland native, I have lived in the north area, and the SW areas

of West Slope, and the "west hills" of Dosch Road. I have lived also

in Beaverton, Aloha and now in Vancouver, across the river. The very

best in Portland, is the SW side where the West Hills are or also

West Slope off of Canyon Drive. I don't remember the names of the

apartments off of Canyon Drive, but they are in the area where the

car dealerships are and then west on the way to downtown. There

are two or three complexes up above Canyon Road. Possibly on

Canyon Drive that are hidden, and ours was in the middle. This is

the safest area I know, short of the west hills not far away near the

Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy.

The schools on the west side have always had a good reputation for

being very good schools. Especially Jesuit and St Mary's Academy.

I found living in Beaverton, I had all of my needs met and I seldom

had to leave that area for shopping or other needs. There is a higher

element of classes in this general area I refer to. Especially the

West Hills area where Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, runs through. I've

never heard of any violence at all on the news from there. It's a very

desireable area in which to live. Many roads lead uphill and you view

homes winding up to the top and then down into the SW side of

Portland, on Burnside. Where older homes reside and old money.

I am going to agree with other responses. There are very few jobs to be had with lots of applicants. Even traditionally good jobs like police and teaching are suffering. I have friends that are teachers and architects that have been laid off. I think Oregon is still in the top 5 states for unemployment. At one time it was second behind Michigan. I haven't read or heard on the news where it is lately. IMO, the affordable areas close to public transportation (MAX trains) are generally not that great. Maybe there are some pockets of decent areas, but most of the places along the east side MAX look pretty bad. The one exception I can think of is the Hollywood District. There might be some better places along the new MAX line that runs down to Clackamas, but that would be a lot of time riding on the trains. Downtown is cool, but expensive. Inner east Portland (NE and SE) have some excellent neighborhoods and it's close to town. I am very fond of Sellwood and the Hawthorne/Belmont areas. I know there are nice areas of SW and NW, but they tend to be the most expensive parts of Portland.

Here's a link to Oregon School Report Cards. If Portland SD 1J is not selected in the drop down, select it, then you will have a list of all Portland schools. The second link is a link to the Portland School District map of home schools. Look in the SW part of the map near schools like "Capitol Hill" to find which schools are in SW Portland.

Multnomah Village is a nice area of SW Portland and has many apartments. You may want to start looking there.

I would recommend the beaverton/tigard area of the SW portland. Beaverton, Tigard and Southridge high schools are all great schools, southridge being the most modern one. The area is very safe, I've lived here for 8 years and have never had any trouble.
