Hi. We live in Ohio and may be moving to Portland. I was wondering what is was like there, like the weather, and why are the houses so expensive? Any areas that are more reasonable around Portland?

Congratulations on leaving the great Midwest!! You'll love it here - I made the move 7 years ago & can't imagine living anywhere else. It only snows about 2-3 days per year & the whole town shuts down. Temperatures are moderate - low humidity in summer compared to out there. Houses are expensive because there's no sales tax & Californians are migrating up here. Rent is more spendy on average, but the minimum wage is higher. Don't move to the suburbs - stay in Portland. Portland is kind of divided into quadrants. NW is trendy & spendy, SE is hippie & moderately priced, NE is hip & fairly cheap, SW is more business-y & kind of high. There is a thriving art community & activities for when it's rainy. The best part, I think, is that it's green all year - you know how gray & dead things look in Ohio in the winter? There are evergreens & fern & all kinds of greenery that make the NW feel a little more alive.

This areas housing has been expensive for the last year and a half. Growing need for housing didn't help this last year. Buying now you should be coming in at a down ward trend in the last few months- lots of houses on the market but not as many buyers- depends on where you want to live.

Schools are better in WA- Vancouver, but if you buy in WA and work in OR you pay WA sales tax and OR state taxes- that can add up.

Check out the school before you buy - if you have children.

It rains throughout the winter and has the most awesome spring and summer. VERY green and lush. Mountain skiing to the east and beaches to the west. Great fishing and hunting, Great hiking and Portland has just about every necessity.

I have lived in both Ohio and Portland, and you will love Portland! The weather is so much milder but you still have the variety of the seasons. Also you can walk and take public transportation more as opposed to just being stuck in a car all the time. And they have Whole Foods--healthy, natural groceries and premade meals that taste great! Definitely can't get that in Ohio. I lived in the Pearl district and I really liked it. Also I found the people to be pretty friendly for a city of its size.

i've got in no way lived in Maine. yet Oregon is a notably sturdy place to stay. intense fee of residing (whilst in comparison with Minnesota the place I grew up) a selection of of trees, mountains, the sea is interior sight. Pacific is lots diverse then the Atlantic. i could prefer to test the east coast sometime inspite of the incontrovertible fact that too.

I would like to move out that area as well.

I am beginning a search out that way and would like to know how fruitful the job search is.
